The Radiological Technologist II performs advanced radiological work while exercising independent clinical judgment, coordinating radiology services, and providing technical expertise in support of individuals diagnosis and treatment. Work involves performing a variety of diagnostic x-ray procedures to obtain and record interpretable diagnostic information for medical staff. Serves as a departmental resource and may provide training, guidance, and support to Radiology staff. The position assumes responsibility for radiology operations in the absence of the Radiology Supervisor. The position assumes responsibility for radiology operations in the absence of the Radiology Supervisor, including coordinating workflow, prioritizing imaging requests, and ensuring continuity of services. Operates radiological equipment to produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes. Coordinates with nursing and medical staff to ensure that appropriate preparatory procedures are performed. Reviews developed x-rays, , or computer-generated information to determine whether images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. Uses radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with policies and regulations, and to ensure the safety of patients and staff. Records patient data and treatment records and assists in the preparation of reports. Schedules patients for routine studies. Assists in performing specialized radiographic procedures. Assists in reviewing stock levels of needed supplies and equipment. Assists the individuals served to and from treatment areas and positions the individual for scans, x-rays, and other diagnostic procedures, and EKGs. May clean, repair, maintain, and make minor adjustments to instruments and equipment. Performs related work as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
This position may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on maximum security locations.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs):
Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Performs x-ray diagnostic routine exams/procedures and operates radiological equipment to produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes as ordered by facility providers. Utilizes the PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) applications Viztek & OnePacs to transmit studies for interpretation by radiologists.
Utilizes the electronic medical record to coordinate with nursing, medical staff, and clinic staff to ensure that appropriate preparatory procedures are performed. Greets individuals upon arrival, assists with gathering pertinent information needed for the medical appointment. Assists with transporting the individual to and from ancillary departments within the clinic. Keeps x-ray & EKG exam rooms clean, organized and stocked with appropriate supplies. Schedules and prepares individuals for x-ray appointments. Performs administrative procedures to include phone calls, logs, appointments, and other clerical duties. Charting, maintaining equipment, assisting with individual care, and maintaining the overall environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of radiology technology principles, practices, procedures, and terminology.
Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, positioning techniques, and radiation protection and safety practices.
Knowledge of operation and proper use of diagnostic radiographic equipment and related imaging systems.
Knowledge of applicable infection prevention and control practices, including proper cleaning and disinfection of imaging equipment and accessories.
Skill in performing diagnostic radiographic examinations and obtaining high-quality images in accordance with established protocols and physician orders.
Skill in applying radiation safety principles, including appropriate shielding, collimation, exposure factors, and ALARA practices.
Ability to assess individual needs, verify orders and individual identification, explain procedures, and provide appropriate care before, during, and after radiographic examinations.
Ability to recognize image quality issues and make appropriate technical adjustments or repeat images when necessary.
Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and safely perform radiographic procedures in a state hospital environment.
Ability to plan, assign, and/or provide guidance to the work of other radiologic staff, students, or support personnel, as assigned.
Initial Screening Criteria:
Two years of experience in radiological technology work required.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:
Current Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiology (R). Current certification/license by Texas Medical Board as a Medical Radiological Technologist (CMRT).
Valid CPR certification.
Currently certified in Vernon State Hospitals approved de-escalation techniques and procedures.
Additional Information:
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco and Terrell Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.
Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All these diseases are vaccine preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
