Training Assistant - Performs entry-level training work. Maintains refresher training records and compiles reports on training programs. Maintains student registrations and coordinates training locations for refresher and specialty classes. Presents courses during new employee orientation and refresher sessions to ensure compliance with minimum training requirements and competency on the job. Assists in development of curriculum and preparation of other training materials related to staff training and development. Prefer experience working directly with a developmentally disabled population.
Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs):
Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Conducts facility training including new employee orientation, refresher training, and continuing education using approved training curriculum and procedures, audiovisual equipment, and practice models. Assists by teaching TIPS, CPR, ANE, and Defensive Driving. Prefer experience as a platform trainer or teaching experience, curriculum development. Able to lift, bend, stoop, kneel, and extend arms and legs.
Performs complex file management. Manages incoming paperwork, filing, copying, and storage.
Will maintain employee training record data, including but not limited to; posting of completed training into PeopleSoft Training Information Management System (TIMS), running training data reports, entering employee training assignments and maintaining employee training files. Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software.
Performs other duties as assigned in order to ensure services are provided. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Other duties as assigned includes backing up other positions within the department at 100% of work time at the discretion of the director. This includes, but is not limited to, extended sitting, computer-based duties, extended typing, running errands to multiple campus locations and sorting/filing paper documents. Duties, location of work and shift pattern are subject to change as determined by administration in order to meet department and hospital needs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of training procedures and techniques; of adult education principles, practices, and techniques; of the group process, group dynamics, and interpersonal relations; of instructional and/or curriculum design; and of program areas to be presented. Demonstration of excellent interpersonal and communication skills, orally and in writing.
Ability to work flexible schedule- primary schedule of 8:00am-5:00pm, and also may work nights, weekends or additional time.
Ability to communicate with courtesy, professionalism and compassion.
Ability to teach adults.
Ability to handle multiple projects at the same time.
Ability to teach and demonstrate skills related to CPR, TIPS, lifting, etc. Preference to CPR and TIPS certified instructors.
Ability to use Windows based programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
Ability to work both within a team environment and independently.
Ability to squat, bend, stoop, kneel and stand.
Ability to lift and carry at least 15 lbs.
Ability to formulate learning objectives; to create and evaluate training objectives, requirements and effective delivery; to communicate effectively; and to assess training.
Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Skilled in the development of training materials, and policies/procedures.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:
Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Initial Screening Criteria:
Experience in training, education, or facilitation work.
Experience in working with IDD population with either adults or adolescents (Preferred).
Experience in file management and computer proficient (Preferred).
Graduation from high school or GED. Course work towards or bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
Additional Information:
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.
Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All these diseases are vaccine preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
Applicants chosen for an interview will be required to prepare a 5-minute presentation for the following scenario: You are teaching a course to new employees who will be working on the Child and Adolescent Unit (CAU). The course is on deescalating patient’s behaviors and practicing your own self-regulation during the de-escalation. Please create a 2-3 slide presentation for this scenario.
