Performs advanced (senior level) motor vehicle maintenance and repair work. Works under limited supervision, may serve in a lead or supervisory role; with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Exchanges, rebuilds, and overhauls motors, transmissions, differentials, carburetors, and other motor vehicle components and systems. Checks and repairs electrical and cooling systems. Performs oil and filter changes, transmission service, brake and suspension repair, tire installation and repair, wheel alignments, air conditioning diagnosis and repair, state vehicle inspections, and other scheduled maintenance. Performs minor engine tune-ups and makes required adjustments on motor vehicles’ motors and engines. Performs motor vehicle body repair work and touch-up painting. Performs safety and emissions inspections. Tests motors and engines for satisfactory performance. Installs after-market accessories and equipment. Maintains records of work performed and parts used. Operates electronic or computerized diagnostic equipment and other specialized tools and equipment using computer-based technical manuals to identify, isolate, adjust, and verify malfunctions and system and component failures. Performs inventories of parts and equipment. Inspect motor vehicles and estimate repairs.

 

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. 

 

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

 

Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

 

Diagnose and repair all functions and controlling system of the motor vehicle.

 

Requisition supplies and check deliveries.

 

Estimate repairs, and work with electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.

 

Coordinate the maintenance/repair of motor vehicles/mechanical equipment.

 

Coordinate wrecker service to pick up wrecked or disabled motor vehicles.

 

Discuss malfunctions, warranties, parts, and service with mechanics, drivers, and manufacturing representatives.

 

Prepare periodic reports and purchase orders.

 

Requisition parts and supplies, and to serve as lead worker providing direction to others.

 

Provide good customer service.

 

Performs related work as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

 

  • Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance, repair techniques, and safety practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and record-keeping procedures, and electrical and computerized systems and emission control systems.

 

  • Skill in locating and diagnosing defective mechanical problems.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment.

 

  • Ability to locate and diagnose defective mechanical operations.
  • Ability to follow instructions, to locate and diagnose defective mechanical operations, and to communicate effectively and provide good customer service.
  • Ability to estimate repairs, and to work with electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to requisition parts and supplies, and to serve as lead worker providing direction to others.
  • Ability to maintain records, and to provide guidance to others. 

 

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

 

Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.

 

National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) preferred.

 

Initial Screening Criteria:

 

Minimum three years’ experience in motor vehicle maintenance and repair work.

 

Graduation from a technical course in motor vehicle maintenance and repair.

 

Total combined experience of at least 6 years may substitute for technical course.

 

 

Additional Information:

 

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

 

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.

 

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

 

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All these diseases are vaccine preventable. Vaccines may be provided. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
