Maintenance Specialist I performs entry-level building maintenance and construction work. Work involves assisting in maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment; and operating motorized equipment. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This position is required to drive a state-owned vehicle.  

 

The Maintenance Specialist normal work schedule is Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., may be required to work additional hours as needed. Will be required to be a member of the San Antonio State Hospital (SASH) Facility Maintenance Department's Emergency Preparedness Response Team 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Shift rotation coverage (after-hours, holidays, and weekends) and On Call as needed.

 

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

 

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

 

Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

 

Performs maintenance, construction, and repair work such as carpentry, painting, or mechanical work.

 

Operates and maintains motorized vehicles and equipment.

 

Assists in the performance of preventative maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, and utility systems.

 

Assists with carpentry, plumbing; electrical; or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work.

 

Assists with maintenance and repairs of machines, equipment, boilers, and boiler feed pumps.

 

Performs inspections of operating machinery, equipment, and utility systems to ensure efficient and safe operations, when requested.

 

Accounts for personal tool inventory by following departmental procedures to ensure safety of patients and employees.

 

Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

 

Knowledge of the construction, repair, maintenance, and operation of buildings, equipment, and utility systems.

 

Skill in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment.

 

Ability to follow instructions; to work from drawings, diagrams, or blueprints; and to communicate effectively.

Ability to stoop, stand, crawl, walk, kneel, climb, and reach.

Ability to lift 50 pounds, pull 75 pounds, and carry 50 pounds.

 

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

 

Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.  

 

Initial Screening Criteria:

 

Six months minimum experience in carpentry, construction, maintenance, or repair work of equipment, building structures, plumbing, electrical or the like.

 

OR

 

Trade school in one of the following: Construction, Plumbing, Electrical, Small Engine Repair, HVAC,

 

 

Additional Information:

 

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

 

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.

 

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

 

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All these diseases are vaccine preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
