Brief Job Description:

This position will lead a team of systems administrators and DBAs on an operations team supporting an AWS cloud-based analytics platform for the Texas Department of State Health Services.

 

Operations team lead coordinates the activities of the team.  Works with the team to plan their work, monitor status, coordinate work schedules and on call schedules. Ensures policies are followed. Helps the team document work by creating and updating tickets.

 

This position will be hands on administering Linux on AWS, including using Kubernetes, monitoring health of the system, automating jobs and alerts, and provisioning users.

 

This candidate will learn to perform administration for Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) servers and will serve as the backup administrator for SAS Viya. The candidate will also be a backup administrator for Tableau servers and may assist other systems administrators as needed.

 

Works under minimal direction with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

 

(25%) Assigns work to the operations team. Monitors status of current work. Plans future work for the team. Coordinates system down time and ensures tickets are created and updated as necessary. Reports status of the team. Maintains on call schedules. Leads meetings when necessary. Coordinates time off taken by the team and advises manager of hours worked by the team.

 

(20%) managing multi-node SAS cluster in a cloud environment, including administration of SAS Visual Analytics, SAS Visual Statistics, SAS Data Preparation, and SAS Data Mining software.

 

(15%) administrating Linux operating system.

 

(10%) installing, configuring and automating data extracts from various data sources including but not limited to Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase, Snowflake, and Salesforce.

 

(10%) support other system admins, including providing coverage for other system admins when they are on leave.

 

(10%) supporting SAS Viya users, answering user questions, addressing issues preventing them from successfully using the system.

 

(5%) Backup systems administrator for Tableau Servers

 

(5%) Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of AWS Networking.
  • Skilled in administering Linux servers on AWS.
  • Skilled with AWS EKS or the ability to learn.
  • Skilled in managing multi-node cluster in a cloud environment. 
  • Ability to learn the administration of SAS Visual Analytics, SAS Visual Statistics, SAS Data Preparation, and SAS Data Mining software.
  • Skilled in installing and configuration of various data sources including but not limited to Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase, Snowflake, MongoDB and Salesforce.
  • Skilled in scheduling and automating data extracts from various data sources such as relational databases, Excel, Access DB, Snowflake, Salesforce etc.
  • Skilled on Linux operating system.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to learn implementing security controls to protect sensitive data processed through the SAS server.
  • Ability to learn integrating SAS Server with an identity and access management system using SAML or by other means
  • Ability to learn automating the monitoring the health of multi-node SAS Server cluster and other resources such as load balancers on a major cloud platform.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

Initial Screening Criteria:

  1. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the areas of computer science, math, or equivalent experience up to 4 years.
  2. At least 4 years of experience as a systems administrator of various tools - Preferred
  3. At least 2 years of experience as a systems administrator on AWS or a similar cloud provider will be preferred.
  4. Candidates with experience leading an operations team will be preferred.
  5. Candidates with experience in the administration of SAS will be preferred.
  6. Candidates that possess one or more of AWS certifications will be preferred.
  7. Candidates with experience with Kubernetes or EKS will be preferred.

 

 

Additional Information:

Any employment offer is contingent upon available budgeted funds. The offered salary will be determined in accordance with budgetary limits and the requirements of HHSC Human Resources Manual.

This is a hybrid position that requires at least two days in the office located in Austin, TX.
