Job Description - Network Specialist V This position works within the HHS Enterprise Network Operations organization and is responsible for working with a team to administer the HHS wide area network (WAN) and/or local area networks (LAN's) and WiFi Solutions (WLAN) and VoIP. Work involves managing the activities, methods, procedures, and tools that pertain to the operation, administration, maintenance, and provisioning of the Enterprise Wide Area Network. Functions of this position include assisting in the monitoring and maintenance of the networks. Responsible for monitoring and reporting changes to the enterprise WAN, LAN, WLAN, VoIP, while ensuring that change management requirements are satisfied. Position will be utilizing network management tools such, SolarWinds, Cisco DNAC, Infoblox, Cisco ISE, Wireshark, or similar such solutions. Works with internal team, customers, and vendors/contractors to ensure that equipment is installed and configured corrrectly. This role will be part of an expanding team that will ultimately support over 67,000 Health and Human Services workers and staff at over 350 remote locations across Texas.
Essential Job Functions: Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. (35%) Works with internal/external customers and/or agencies to provide WAN/LAN/Wi-fi related hardware and software installation and support. (15%) Monitors existing network and system procedures for efficiency and effectiveness. Makes recommendations for efficiency and potential areas of network optimization. (15%) Maintains performance monitoring and alerting through the use of enterprise management tools. Alerts management and other IT groups when sensitive issues arise or a major problem is suspected. (15%)
Maintains critical IP-based infrastructure services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Network Time Protocol (NTP), and Domain Name System (DNS). Supports IP Address Management (IPAM) system and support tools. (10%) Administers network software and hardware in accordance with industry best practice security standards and configuration management methodologies. (10%) Knowledge Skills Abilities: Documents operational and project material to be used by front line support personnel. Communicates network related activities to technology and business areas include root cause analysis and agency change control. |
Demonstrated ability to interact positively and constructively with customers. - Excellent oral and written communication skills to share findings in an understandable and actionable manner, demonstrated with internal groups, partners, and customers. - An ability to handle multiple competing priorities. - Capable of turning ambiguous problems into clear information. - A firm understanding of the concepts of confidentiality, integrity, and availability, and experience and ability to apply these concepts to the operational components of the HHS Enterprise Network. - Ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment. - Experience working with WAN design, implementation, and support in accordance with established Change Management procedures and in compliance with SLA's. - Ability to manage and ensure optimal operation of all network hardware, equipment, and solutions including routers, switches, firewall, etc. from Cisco and other major hardware vendors. - Establish root cause of issues by engaging other internal/external entities. - Ability to utilize available troubleshooting tools, including network packet captures, monitoring devices, log files, and customer input in order to ensure effective resolution of issues. - Develop technical solutions for resolving complex information technology networking needs or problems. - Experience in the use of Remedy/Helix for ITSM activities including incident, change, and configuration management in a manner consistent with HHS enterprise policies in these areas. - In-depth knowledge of support and best practices for enterprise network monitoring tools such as the Solarwinds suite, the CA suite, or Nagios. |
Registrations, License Requirements, or Certifications
Initial Screening Criteria At least 3 years employment supporting network infrastructure (preferred). Experience of Trouble Ticketing System(Remedy, ServiceNow, etc...) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in computer science, management information systems, or a related field is generally preferred. Education and experience may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis. Proficient in MS Office products(Excel, Word, and Powerpoint |
