Job Description:

The DevOps Engineer focuses on development, maintenance and configuration of Azure cloud technology solutions to include Cloud Storage, Function App, Log Monitoring, Cloud Shell and Database performance maintenance. This position requires deep and extensive knowledge of enterprise web architecture domains, Linux-based systems, Kubernetes containers and enterprise architecture disciplines. This is an experienced, senior-level position required to address all the complex cloud and web-based technologies for mission critical applications.

  •    Introduces processes, tools and methodologies to balance needs throughout the software development life cycle on a cloud platform (Azure), from coding and deployment to maintenance and updates.
  •    Manages periodic reporting to management and customer on the performance of the application and improvements being applied or needed.
  •    Mentors and guides other developers for best SDLC, CI/CD practices in order to enhance the performance of the applications.
  •    Defines and sets development, test, release, update and support processes for DevOps operations.
  •    Implements procedures, processes, configurations, tools and guidelines for continuous improvement.

Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions (EJF):

1. (40%) Directs the work efforts of technical leads implementing and maintaining cloud-based systems in AWS, Azure, and GCP. Enables delivery of complex, highly technical systems critical to the agencies mission. Work involves hands-on implementation, analyzing user requirements, and problem analysis to implement cloud systems.  Provides expertise and guidance to multiple simultaneous projects. 

2. (40%) Drives and leads initiatives across agency systems, other IT groups and other state entities that require coordinating, planning, and scheduling during strategic development and implementation stages. Prepares cloud architectural standards to direct the work of multiple groups and projects. Provides options in the determination and implementation of architectural solutions. Provides a design and implementation of new or revised methods that effectively meet agency needs. 

  3. (20%) Articulates the current state and desired future state of an architecture, identifies gaps between the two states, and develops approaches to close any gaps. Collaborates with HHSC IT groups on recommendations. Assists in the preparation of information technology planning and justification.  Serves as a leader in the organization's development of a cloud-based program. 

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

• One or more Cloud certifications such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) Certified Solutions Architect, or Microsoft Azure Architect Design 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Knowledge of cloud-based services for AWS, Azure, and GCP.

Knowledge of databases, including SQL and NoSQL data stores, e.g. Postgres.

Knowledge of scripting, such as PowerShell, Python, or Perl. 

Knowledge of cloud delivery models: PaaS, SaaS, IaaS.

Knowledge of automation of CI/CD and DevOps environment.

Knowledge of agile (scrum) methodology and scrum ceremonies.

Knowledge of open-source technology, software development and systems engineering.

Knowledge of OpenStack, Linux/UNIX, Rackspace, Docker, etc.

Knowledge of declarative languages (e.g., yaml, json, etc.).

Knowledge of architecture frameworks (e.g., TOGAF ,SOA)

Skill in architecting services, including APIs and Web Services.

Skill in systems design, programming, implementation and integration of complex distributed IT solutions (e.g. cloud, distributed systems or high-performance computing experience).

Skill in architecting modern web applications using one or more of the following: Node, ReactJS, Angular, Spring, Spring Boot, RDBMS.

Ability to be adaptable and learn quickly.

Ability to deliver work within defined schedules, cost and quality.

Ability to coordinate multiple assignments, set priorities, and meet deadlines.

Ability to communicate with a high level of effectiveness both verbally and in written formats.

Ability to adapt and learn quickly.

Ability to lead and provide direction to team members.     

Ability to lead the creation of best practices and procedures.

Initial Screening Criteria:

 

Preferred graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in Math, Science, or Computer Science related.

Must have at least 3 yrs of experience DevOps activities in the Cloud, such as CI/CD, testing and deployments.

Must have at least 3 yrs in software development

Preferred experience in cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud
