Job Description: |
Public Health Nurse I: Under the supervision of the Community Health Improvement Manager or Supervisor (PHN III), uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, coordinate, deliver and evaluate public health nursing services in the assigned geographic area. Provides services to individuals, families, groups and communities with health needs ranging from simple to complex but focused on the promotion of optimum wellness and disease prevention. Serves as the team leader for the DSHS staff in the community. Coordinates the day-to-day operations of population-based services and direct clinic services to include meeting program directives and Title V Maternal Child Health performance measures. Responds to a variety of state or regional emergencies, including disease outbreaks and pandemics, hurricanes, tornados and other natural or man-made disasters. Works with general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. |

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications: |
Licensed to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse in Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Knowledge Skills Abilities: |
Knowledge of professional nursing theory, nursing process and the legal framework of nursing including the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners' rules and regulations, the Nurse Practice Act and medical standing delegation orders.
Initial Screening Criteria: Experience working in a health setting, or a public or community health clinic. Experience providing group or individual education, especially in a public health setting. Experience administering injection, drawing blood and screening clients. |
