Brief Job Description:

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) custodial work—works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment. Custodian II may fully perform various routine daily tasks but may often rely on direction from others to solve problems that are not standard.  Will serve as Texas Center for Infectious Disease - Hospital campus-wide floater. The Custodian will clean and maintain the exterior and interior of buildings. Cleans and disinfects interior surfaces following hospital Infection Control Policies and the Joint Commission Standards. The custodian will work around patients.  Collects and disposes of regular trash, medical waste, and hazardous waste. Other duties include moving dirty linen to dirty linen pickup storage, performing periodic inventories for the EVS department, and moving furniture and equipment as assigned. Custodians may occasionally assist others in performing job duties of greater complexity.  This position requires one to drive a state-owned vehicle.

 

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

Attends work regularly and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift, work every other weekend, and/or overtime following agency leave policy and performing other duties as assigned. 

1. Performs all duties appropriately for the patient's age. Will have contact with hospital patients. Personal protective equipment may be used for isolation rooms. (10%)

2. Cleans and disinfects the interior and exterior of hospital buildings: patient rooms, lobbies, nurses’ stations, and offices.  As a campus-wide floater, the custodian will cover shortages as they arise. (25%)

3. Vacuum, strip, wax, and burnish floors using hand tools and electrical power equipment such as scrubbers, I-Mop, and T3 floor machines. (10%)

4. Cleans windows (inside and out using a power sprayer, sponges, wands, and ladders, etc. (5%)

5. Cleans, dusts, and disinfects areas including but not limited to the bath/restrooms, walls, railings, and furniture using cleaning chemicals and caddy provided, complies with Infection Control Policies and Standards, and Joint Commission Standards. (15%)

6. Collects and disposes of trash from offices, patient-care areas, patios, stairways, and grounds. (10%)

7. Collects medical waste, hazardous waste, and regular trash from cleaning areas and dispose of waste/trash into appropriate containers using proper personal protective equipment. (10%)

8. Other duties may include distributing clean linen, replenishing supplies in maid carts, cleaning elevators, setting up conference rooms for meetings, and moving furniture and equipment as assigned. (5%)

9. Attends mandatory training as assigned and online training as required. (5%)

10. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or supporting to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. (5%)

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

1.   Knowledge of the purpose of, dilution method of, and application of germicidal; able to demonstrate disinfecting and cleaning methods. Knowledge of Cleaning techniques and procedures. 

2.   Knowledge of proper handling and disposal of medical waste and hazardous waste in appropriate containers.

3.   Knowledge of Infection Control Policies and Standards when working in areas where Tuberculosis patients are treated.

4.   Knowledge required to provide age-appropriate care to young adults and geriatric patients.

5.   Skill in the use of floor equipment.

6.   Ability to read, write, and understand English effectively to communicate and carry out verbal/written instructions.

7.   Ability to follow instructions and communicate with co-workers and supervisors.

 

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

Must possess a valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after the hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. An eligible driving record is required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.  

 

Initial Screening Criteria:

1. Experience in custodial work.

2. Graduation from High School or GED equivalent preferred. Experience and education may be subsituted for one another.

 

Additional Information:

Selected candidates must be able to meet the following:

·   Repeated bending, simple and simultaneous grasping, finger/manual dexterity, vision, hearing, reach above shoulder, twist upper body, move approximately 150 pounds with or without assistance. 

·      Perform assigned duties while wearing the required respiratory protective equipment which will be fitted for employees. 

    Comply with a Tobacco Free Campus and all employment checks and testing.
