Job Description: Health Physicist I - Mammography Inspector - Performs complex and highly advanced technical inspections of mammography systems state-wide, related reports, and records, in accordance with state and federal guidelines to ensure compliance with state and federal mammography regulations, as well as a working knowledge of mammography certification actions. Works under minimal supervision and guidance from the Branch Manager, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Job Functions:
- Plans and conducts inspections of mammography systems state-wide, related reports, and records to evaluate compliance with State and federal mammography regulations. Conducts inspections in accordance with State and Federal guidelines. Evaluate x-ray equipment compliance, during inspections, by performing and analyzing the results of the following tests: AEC reproducibility, AEC timer performance, manual mode reproducibility (linearity), entrance skin exposure (ESE), beam quality (HVL), mammographic image quality with respect to the x-ray field/Image receptor/compression paddle alignment; image quality with mammographic test pattern, darkroom fog and processor speed. Performs detailed review of mammographic quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) programs and records. Evaluates mammography personnel's compliance with qualification requirements. (70%)
- Prepares detailed investigative reports of facilities and equipment evaluated under provisions of MQSA, related regulations, and guidelines. Prepares a copy of the FDA Facility Inspection report for each facility inspected. Submits all necessary reports to the FDA data collection center and the Department of State Health Services in accordance with State and Federal guidelines. (25%)
- Plans and conducts investigations and surveys of mammography facilities in response to complaints and/or allegations of noncompliance. Prepares comprehensive scientific investigation reports. Assists and trains other MQSA inspectors. Other duties as assigned include, but are not limited to, conducting Mammography Certification duties, actively participating and serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and recovery of Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and location. Performs radiation emergency response functions during exercises and actual emergency conditions. Maintains personal and assigned equipment ready for emergency response and deployment. Coordinates training through the radiation emergency response training coordinator, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and approved training courses to maintain required proficiency for assigned emergency response duties. (5%)

Knowledge Skills Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of complex health physics and radiation control.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations concerning radiation control and safety.
- Knowledge of radiation safety techniques and practices.
- Knowledge of mammographic system functions and operations.
- Knowledge of the function, design, and operation of equipment used in radiation detection, measurement, or environmental monitoring.
- Knowledge of mammography equipment and mammographic processing parameters.
- Knowledge of mammographic quality assurance program components.
- Knowledge of business English, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Knowledge of mathematics is required to perform calculations common to health physics.
- Skilled in the operation of radiation detection and monitoring instruments.
- Skilled in basic computer literacy, with specific attention paid to word processing and database management skills on a laptop computer.
- Skilled in establishing communication and rapport with the public and staff of inspected facilities.
- Skilled in writing, specifically technical reports and regulatory language.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to evaluate sites for potential radiation and public health hazards.
- Ability to interpret and use radiation shielding designs and radiological and statistical data.
- Ability to interpret laws and regulations.
- Ability to organize and implement a travel and inspection schedule.
- Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to supervise the work of others.
Initial Screening Criteria:
Meeting at least one of the following four (4) criteria is required; the hiring supervisor cannot consider any applicant who does not meet one of the required criteria for this position. Experience and education may be substituted for one another (2 years of experience may be substituted for 60 semester hours).
1. Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in a science or health-related field from an accredited two or four-year college or university, or
2. Current or previous ARRT Certification as a Radiology Technologist with at least two years of experience, or
3. Current or previous MRT Certification as a Radiology Technologist with at least two years of experience, or
4. MQSA Inspector Certification.
The following seven (7) criteria are generally preferred but are not required; the hiring supervisor may consider any applicant who does not meet any or all the generally preferred criteria for this position, and may give preference to an applicant who meets one or more of the generally preferred criteria:
1. Recent experience operating radiation machines in a clinical setting, or
2. Experience applying laws, rules, policies, and procedures relating to governmental regulation, or
3. Experience as a state or federal inspector, or
4. Experience as a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), or
5. Experience in a health physics position, or
6. Experience in a regulatory/quality control position in a regulated industrial, educational, or medical industry, or
7. Recent experience in the assembly, maintenance, or repair of radiation machines.
