The Barber/Cosmetologist performs moderately complex (journey-level) barber or cosmetology work. The position involves the maintenance of the beauty salon, to include inventory/requisition of supplies and ensuring that the environment meets cleanliness standards. The position will ensure the appropriate sterilization methods are used to ensure the health and safety of the individuals served. The barber/cosmetologist develops a schedule of services, ensuring services are available to all individuals who require them in a timely manner. The barber/cosmetologist will consult with individuals and assigned staff to determine the preferred style or service for the individual. The services performed may include, but not be limited to haircuts, shampooing, hair styling, permanent color/treatments, shaving, and beard trimming. The barber/cosmetologist is responsible for maintaining records of services performed. This position may communicate with residential staff to provide instruction on proper care for an individual. The barber/cosmetologist will function under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

 

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

 

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

 

Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

 

Performs services for residents as requested, to include but not be limited to cuts, shampoos, combs, and styles hair; gives permanent waves; applies color rinse.

 

Communicates with residents and staff to determine the preferred service for the individual.

 

Works with residential staff and managers to develop a schedule for providing services, maintains a schedule of appointments, and maintains records of all work performed.

 

Inventories and requests supplies through appropriate sources.

 

Uses appropriate sterilization methods to sanitize sterilizes scissors, combs, clippers, and other instruments, ensuring that all supplies are in good condition.

 

Performs basic housekeeping services as needed to beauty shop or other workstation to include sanitizing area and floors.

 

Sorts and inventories soiled linens for laundry and counts and stores clean linens.

 

May perform other barber/cosmetology services, to include shaving, beard and mustache trims, manicure nails, arch eyebrows, gives scalp treatments, and applies facials.

 

May work with staff to provide information and instruction to others on recommended haircare based on the needs of the individual. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

 

Knowledge of formal barber/cosmetology techniques for performing hair care/hair styling on various types of hair.

Knowledge of sanitation standards for equipment, tools and location of services to be performed.

 

Skill in the art of dealing with clients of all ages and hair types.

 

Ability to use judgment to perform barber/cosmetology services on individuals according to the preference of the person served.

Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing in order to accomplish goals.

Ability to organize/prioritize work assignments (requests for hair care, etc.) to ensure that all services are performed in a timely manner.

Ability to problem solve as issues arise in the performance of job duties.

Ability to work professionally with residents and staff on all levels to ensure a harmonious work environment.

Ability to maintain the beauty shop, other locations where services are to be performed, and supplies in a safe and sanitary manner.

 

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

 

Must be licensed as a Class A barber or as a cosmetologist by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

 

Initial Screening Criteria:

 

At least six (6) months experience working as a barber or cosmetologist; one (1) year is preferred.

 

Additional Information:

 

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

 

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.

 

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.

 

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All these diseases are vaccine preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
